Eladio’s Farm
Our journey begins in the hilly village of San Pedro Columbia, where we will pass traditional thatch homes and turn our vehicle down a jungle road. A small sign marks the beginning of the trail to Eladio’s farm. The transition from wild jungle to cultivated agro forestry is subtle, and as you walk the half mile to meet him, you may not notice the cacao, mangoes, jippy jappa, bananas, and other plants which flourish on the property.

Follow Eladio further into the trees and learn about his organic agriculture techniques and unique philosophy on farming. Along the trail he may offer samples of unusual edible plants, and teach you about the various creatures that can help or hurt his produce. Eladio will pay special attention to cacao, the fruit that produces cocoa beans. Taste some of the tangy fruit and learn a little about the processes of fermenting, drying, winnowing, and conching the beans to produce finished chocolate.
After your hike, return to the village with Eladio for a freshly made traditional meal at his hom. Get a taste of Maya family life as the children come home from school and the household buzzes around you.
