The village of Blue Creek is situated in a valley between several karst limestone hills. While most visitors to this area come for Hokeb Ha Cave, the surrounding areas are equally worth exploring. For this challenging hike, you’ll head up one of the tallest hills in this area.
You’ll begin on an easy path alongside the clear water of Blue Creek. After crossing the river over a few rocks, hike deeper into the jungle and begin to make your way uphill. The path here is extremely steep for the next hour or so, and more of a climb than a hike.Your guide will point out flora and fauna along the route.Once you reach the top of the first hill, take in the stunning view of the valley and the farms beyond. If you have the energy, push on towards the top of the next hill. The path levels out here, and the final summit will afford you a 360° view of the surrounding countryside and the hills of Guatemala. Sift through the small stones at your feet. You may find shards of Mayan pottery or other small artifacts.
Head back downhill, thankfully a much easier trip, and reward yourself with a dip in the clear blue pools and waterfalls cascading from the mouth of Blue Creek Cave. After a refreshing swim return to the village for a picnic lunch and a well-deserved rest. This excursion is recommended only for those in very good physical condition.
